How to review books for your child
Fry Readability Graph
When choosing books to read with your child, it is important to pick literature that is at an appropriate age level. That is why the Fry Readability Graph was invented. Parents and teachers can use this chart to evaluate books and decide if they are appropriate for students and children. Here's how you can use the chart at home.
1) Choose a book.
2) Choose three 100 word passages from the book.
3) For each passage, count the number of sentences, and the number of syllables.
4) Average the number of sentences and the number of syllables for all three passages.
5) Plot the points on the graph (The sections are labeled by grade level. If your point is plotted in that section, then that is the appropriate grade level for that book to be read at.)
A Note:
Book levels are not set in stone. Books can be read to a variety of children depending on their knowledge level. The Fry Readability Graph is a useful tool to gauge the age level for a book, but it is not the only way to decide if a book is appropriate.
