Algebraic Vocabulary
sum: The answer to an addition problem.
difference: Then answer to a subtraction problem.
product: The answer to a multiplication problem.
associative property: In addition and multiplication, no matter how the numbers are grouped, the answer is the same
Ex. (A+B) + C = A + (B +C)
(5 X 3) X 4 = 60
5 X (3 X 4) = 60
common Factor: A whole number that divides two or more other numbers exactly
Ex. 2 is a common factor for 8, 10, and 12
common multiple: a multiple that is shared by two numbers
Ex. 12 is a multiple of 2 and 6 because 12 = 2 X 6
commutative property: in addition and multiplication, numbers may be added or multiplied together in any order
Ex. 3 X 6 = 6 X 3
distributive property: multiplying a number is the same as multiplying its addends by the number, then adding the products.
Ex. 2 X (4 +5) = (2 X 4) + (2 X 5)
dividend: the number being divided ( 25 ÷ 5 = 5)
divisor: the number that will divide the dividend exactly ( 25 ÷ 5 = 5)
quotient: The result of the division ( 25 ÷ 5 = 5)
factor: a whole number that divides equally into another number (ex. 2 is a factor of 16)
identity property: For addition, adding 0 will not change a number. For multiplication, multiplying by 1 will not change a number.
4 X 7 = 28
