TIPS FOR READING WITH YOUR CHILD
Reading with your child at home is key to developing a good reader. Here are some tips on how to read at home.
1. Pick a book that is "just right" Make sure to pick a book that is right for your child. Use the Fry Readability Graph to decide what grade level a book is meant for. Also, you should pick a book that your child is interested in. Ask your child what they would like to read about and go from there!
2. Ask questions When reading a book, stop to ask comprehension questions. You don't want to do this too often, because it can distract the reader from the story. But asking questions is a great way to develop reading comprehension skills.
3. Start a routine Reading should be a part of the daily routine. Choose a time to read with your child and be consistent. It doesn't need to be long, but it should be about the same each day.
4. Relate the story to reality When reading, you should stop to relate the book content to real life. Tell stories about things that have happened to you, or talk about an experience that relates. This is a great way to make connections that will encourage expression in the future.
5. Summarize Don't forget to ask your child to summarize what they read. When your finished reading, ask questions and encourage your child to summarize. This will lead to good comprehension skills.
